Tanuki Good Fortune – Mount Kurama, Kyoto – Mug

¥2,908 JPY (plus tax)

A pair of round-bellied tanuki statues with their sake flasks and a hanging lantern, printed on both sides of a glossy white ceramic mug.

In Japanese folk tradition the tanuki is a cheerful shape-shifter, and tanuki statues stand outside shops and inns as a traditional symbol of good fortune and welcome.

Based on my own photographs of the tanuki statues near the foot of Mount Kurama, from more than 80 visits to the mountain, where I lead group and private tours. Dishwasher and microwave safe. Printed on demand and shipped to you.
